The New Testament contains references to usury, notably in the Parable of the talents:
"Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury."
"Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.."
"…Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow. Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?"
The Koran has the following verses:
O you who believe, you shall not take usury, compounded over and over. Observe God, that you may succeed. (Al-'Imran 3:130)
And for practicing usury, which was forbidden, and for consuming the people's money illicitly. We have prepared for the disbelievers among them painful retribution. (Al-Nisa 4:161)
The usury that is practiced to increase some people's wealth, does not gain anything at God. But if people give to charity, seeking God's pleasure, these are the ones who receive their reward many fold. (Ar-Rum 30:39)
While Jews are allowed to practise usury on other tribes, Muslims are forbidden to practise usury at all. Christians have always been the, er, piggy, in the middle.
Catholicism and Christianity in general, being mostly stuffed to its rafters with feminists, liberals and Commine Pinko Paedo priests, is no longer fit for purpose, so it should be dumped in favour of a religion more fit for the purpose of maintaining the morals of the West, before its people fall into the slough of irreversible degeneracy and disgrace.
Usury is clearly harmful since it encourages irresponsible borrowing and lending in individuals and governments. This, as well as LIBOR manipulating shenanigans, is the cause of the credit crunch.
There is no point in the Pope converting to Judaism because that would perpetuate the status to quo.
The only religion for the new and old Pope to convert to would be Islam which states unequivocably as I have shown above that usury is forbidden.
I propose that the papal candidates be interviewed for their views on usury and whether they are prepared to stick their neck out and propose its abolition.
Below are the candidates considered papabile.
- Angelo Scola, Italy
- Marc Ouellet, Canada
- Christoper Schoenborn, Austria
- Odilo Scherer, Brazil
- Leonardo Sandri, Argentina
- Peter Turkson, Ghana
- Luis Tagle, Philippines
- Joao Braz de Aviz, Brazil
- Timothy Dolan, United States
- Gianfranco Ravasi, Italy
- Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, Honduras
- Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, Cuba

Muslims the world over should extend the dawah http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawah to the old and new Popes to reinforce this point. The point is to tell them they can still be Pope, but Pope of Islam.
