I have subsequently clarified this with John Collins, who says:

The point I made was by the time the millennial generation dies out and their children and grandchildren are in the world, they will be in such a poor state of mental health that Islam would be an improvement on what they will be by then. My Muslim friends make that case to me in defence of Islam. In fifty years time, Islam would be an improvement on what will be left of society.
