Jim Al-Khalili new President of British Humanist Society

He compares religion to a crutch and God to Santa.

So do I, but I argue for a theocracy because the Little People need their crutches and their Santa.

It is the duty of the Big People - the ones who know what a principle is and who want to do good for the sake of wanting to be good - to pretend that God exists for the sake of the Little People, who do not know what a principle is and whose eyes close and whose mouths open when you try to explain it to them, who will only be good and tell the truth if there is a reward in the hereafter and refrain from evil and telling lies if there is a punishment in the hereafter.

In all probability neither did the Prophets of God really believe in God.  The Prophets of God used God the way parents now use Santa to encourage their children to better behaviour.

That is the long and short of it really, and this is what I propose we do - establish a theocracy along the lines of Josephus.

Josephus understood theocracy as a fourth form of government in which only God and his law is sovereign.

I really have no problem with the legal and political system being infused with Koranic principles.

For those who throw their hands up in horror, would they kindly tell me which laws they fear?

They should ignore all the stories and statements, and only concentrate on what the Koran commands that we must do and refrain from doing.

HELP ME ANNOY THE FEMALE-DOMINATED PC BBC

Would you like to nominate Claire Khaw for the iPM New Year Honour for being the most entertainingly philosophical, political and theological Woman of the Year?  Go on, go on, go on!

They won't let me win, but you will succeed in annoying them if the nominations keep coming in.

  1. Even though Jim Al-Khalili is a promoter of quantum mechanics and it is quantum mechanics that shows that the universe is no longer a hard physical substance anymore
