Labour can’t or won’t admit this, because it founded the NHS and claims it as its own. Likewise the Lib Dems are bound into this consensus. The Tories fear it would be electoral suicide to do something serious about it.
Nigel Lawson famously remarked that the NHS is the nearest thing we have these days to a state religion. Nobody can criticise a state religion. It’s much easier, and far more agreeable, to pretend that horse meat is the big story. Psychologists would call the events of the last week “transference”. And if British politicians (of all parties) carry on changing the subject, the more certain it is that there will be fresh Staffords to come."

What is Peter Oborne hinting at? What is it that he dos not quite dare say? I believe it is as follows:
- The Welfare State (including the NHS)
- The Slut Single Mother who must not be offended (even by alpha male politicians) and all that she holds dear, including her disabled offspring with which she uses to wring more welfare benefits from the taxpayer
- Sexual Liberation
It is the simplest matter to propose that all three be slain. The reaction would be similar to what the boy in The Emperor’s New Clothes experienced. It will be traumatic but ultimately rewarding and even satisfying.
Think of the three as the legs of a tripod. Remove just one and the whole thing will collapse. We should do it, because it is easiest thing in the world if we all say the same thing at the same time.
