Conscious contact with God - even when you don't believe in God - is to count our blessings and be grateful for their source, wherever we think they are from. Sadly for entitled Western degenerates, they are no longer cognisant of the concept of blessing. It has been said that those who do not count their blessings lose them one by one until, instead of blessings, all they get is curses from God.
For a full list of curses it is possible to receive from God, you can do no better than refer to Deuteronomy 28 under Curses for Disobedience. The final curse is that the disobedient will eventually be sold as slaves, but no one will want to buy them.

Slavery was of course a form of welfare in ancient times because the owner of the slave was obliged to house and feed his slave.
