The European Union

Harry Beckhough, that distinguished and remarkably computer-literate veteran of the Great War, has demanded to know why I have so far said nothing about the European Union's abhorrent embrace that is stifling the liberties of free-born Britons. I hope he will accept my explanation that the direct democracy website I will soon be launching must be entirely apolitical and not officially advocate any course of action, apart from extolling the virtues of direct democracy (and recommending it to every nation on earth capable of running such a system).

My belief is that one must not tell people what to do, which only makes them bloody- minded and do the opposite. Instead, we should give them all the pros and cons as honestly as possible, in the hope that they will come to the right decision for themselves and others, on grounds of enlightened self-interest alone.

Demonstrating the obvious virtues of such a system would be the operating purpose of my soon-to-be-launched website.

Want to know something more about the European Union, then read this

Maybe that gives you an idea. And as a "victim" of Europe, I can tell you that most of all people of the countries in this "Union" is against the EU. Everybody only sees his own interests. But you know what, we will not profitate from this now, but the next generations will ! It's already wonderful to be able to work in another country without any problem. I had to ask for a work permit when I started to work in Belgium and also you can travel without passport, (for those who have an identity card) and you pay in € (except UK) which allows you to easy compare prices. And I am even allowed now to vote at least for municipal elections, which is very important to me as I live in Belgium since over 40 years and it had become "my country" You see there are many pros ! My son for example lives in London, works for the moment in Amsterdam and has two passports German and Italian. I believe maybe in 20 years we all will be Europeans, but every country will keep its identity and uses.

The Power Inquiry report 2006 has given a boost to the idea of direct democracy. One of their recommended ways to reform our democracy and government is to introduce citizens' initiative (e.g. law proposal) in local and central government. Our campaign has been informing about direct democracy and advocating "initiative and referendum" for some years. See

Try this site...

www.e-democracy.gov.uk

...it's a good start and various local and state governments in the US have many e-democracy sites.

My thoughts on the matter...

People register on a web site BYOO (Be Your Own Chancellor), entering data about themselves which remains annoynomous.

If they allow that data to be validated then their 'budget' is used in the 'weighting process' later on.

They then 'create' their own budget, much as the bbc website allows people to 'be their own chancellor'. But instead of just very high level '5% extra income tax on two parent single child families', the person can create their own categories, their own tax and benefit structure with assorted rules.

The key is that the user can spend two minutes creating a very high level budget or associating themselves to someone elses budget - or - spend days creating and refining a budget.

The users budget then gets calculated according to the national population and the person is confronted with the results of their budget.

Smarts in place to make it a pleasurable web experience.

Political parties then create their policies based on their own rules...

"take away the top 10% of budgets based on taxes and the bottom 15% of budgets based on taxes" - or whatever - generate a budet from the budgets in the middle and there you have it.

This concept allows people to state their budget and have it weighed in the balance the same as everyone elses. The whole nation decides, but any one person only has as much say as any one other person.
