Solon ended exclusive aristocratic control of the government, substituted a system of control by the wealthy, and introduced a new and more humane law code. He was also a noted poet.

Orson Welles invented these lines for Harry Lime in The Third Man:
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance.
In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."
Well, now the Swiss have surrendered one of the Borgias to be tried & hanged.
Or imprisoned at least.
No "benefit of clergy" for the fair-minded Swiss.
