Sunspot timings at Ramadan: The best and worst places to observe Muslim festival http://t.co/Dn0uRgNKfB

@Mufti_Muhammad_ @DillyHussain88 Fasting hours should be the same length of time as it is in Mecca for Muslims all over the world.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@Mufti_Muhammad_ @DillyHussain88 If fasting time begins at 8am n ends at 8pm in Mecca it should be the same for Muslims all over the world.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@mgvsmith I have told Muslims how long they should be fasting at https://t.co/WBkWIrfmob Perhaps that would put an end to their quarrels.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@mgvsmith I also have an idea for peace in the Middle East. It is such a great shame that no one ever listens to me.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@mgvsmith Duration of fasting in Mecca 15 hrs 47 mins. http://t.co/zCYUDNAlPq @DillyHussain88 @MuslimCouncil @Muslim_Patrol @anjemchoudary
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem And what's her ijtihad based upon? Im good with my fasting, thanks 😁
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam Common sense of course.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem coming sense is doesn't qualify for ijtihad. People hold different definitions of common sense based on their viewpoint on life.
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam As @mgvsmith was saying to me earlier, we shouldn't be enslaved by tradition/history.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem Nor should we be enslaved by opinions of others who have limited understanding of that history. Misery follows when man dictates 😁
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam Whether you like it or not, it is humans who interpret the laws of God.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem why do you have the freedom to dictate whether k like something or not? Why does it bother you? 😊
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I am not dictating, just suggesting. If you are saying my suggestion is irrational, please say why.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam My idea makes the most sense and is fairest for Muslims all over the world, but you reject it cos you dislike new ideas.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem Islam doesn't need reformation, only irrational thinking does.
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam Are you suggesting my proposal is irrational?
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I am not dictating, just suggesting. If you are saying my suggestion is irrational, please say why.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem Quite a biased opinion. Like I said Opinions are only influenced by ones viewpoint on life. Have u studied Islamic history to decide
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I don't need to study any Islamic history to know that my suggestion makes the most sense and would be fairest to the ummah.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem yes. If you can give me a rational reason based on your comprehensive understanding of Islam I'll take you up on your offer
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I have already said my proposal would be fairest to Muslims all over the world.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem that's where being irrational comes in. You cannot suggest a solution to a 'supposed' problem you haven't fully understood yourself
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam The problem is some Muslims fast longer than other Muslims depending on where they r. What if a Muslim lives in the North Pole?
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam Does this mean that a Muslim in the North Pole where the sun does not set for 6 months starves to death? You know it makes sense
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem who says they're starving?
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@ntfem fasting is 1 of the healthiest experiences. Detoxes the body, prevents cancer aside from other material benefit. Read studies on this
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@ntfem but why is it the fairest? How is it the fairest?
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam My proposal means Muslims all over the world fast for the same duration: that is why it is fair.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem that's irrational.
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam You need to explain how and why.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam https://t.co/ZCJwED9h2k Around the summer solstice the sun is visible for the full 24 hours.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem you're missing the point. We don't care about the hours.
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I think you would if you were a Finnish Muslim and didn't want to starve to death.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I thought Muslims were supposed to care about their brothers and sisters in other lands. Your callousness is appalling.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem your judgement is depressing and oppressive. If you're truly a humanitarian than speak out against those Muslims who wish to fast
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@ntfem yet can't because of tyrants regimes like in China. Your western secular approach fails to persuade me
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I disapprove of the heavy-handed approach of the Chinese government in the way it deals with Muslims. Happy now?
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I am aghast that you feel logic and reason is a badge of Western secularism and to be disapproved of by Muslims.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam The Koran enjoins Muslims to use reason, but you do not appear to be aware of this. http://t.co/scwxy7b5JK
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam A quarter of Finland's territory does not set at all for 60 days during summer = STARVED DEAD FINNISH MUSLIMS. You don't care?
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem do you fast?
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam Please answer my question first before asking me a question. I think you are avoiding the question. You may phone a friend.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam So, you would let these poor Finnish Muslims STARVE TO DEATH at #Ramadan, would you?
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem yore avoiding mine tho. What's your rationale?
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam Perhaps you will say that Muslims are forbidden to live in the land of the midnight sun lest they starve to death during Ramadan
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam Perhaps you are saying that the Caliphate must never extend to Finland?
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem quite presumptuous of you 😕 can we engage in dialogue without your judgemental banter.
Hope this helps - http://t.co/5VobHvwKNr
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam Thank you for that, but I cannot help but think a standardised duration for the Ummah based on Meccan daylight hours wd b best.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@ntfem there are specific reasons as to why we don't go by standardised times as prayer times take place at specific times in the day.
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@ntfem Muslims dnt change these times as God is our legislator & th times have been prescribed by Him. I welcome u to challenge the Quran
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@ntfem For Muslims we have a rational understanding of our way of life. One cannot fathom it without attempting to comprehend it.
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@ntfem what right have you been given to dictate the laws Muslims follow?
— Samima Begum شميمة (@WiseOwlSam) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I am not a dictator so I can;t dictate anything to anyone. I can only make suggestions which ppl like you confuse with dictation
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I am not challenging the Koran since it is silent on prayer times.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam You are just rejecting everything I say because it is different to what you heard before.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015
@WiseOwlSam I think you are just being closed-minded and prejudiced. If someone Muslim said the same thing you would accept it happily.
— Claire Khaw (@ntfem) June 21, 2015

This is an old opinion - many have suggested it but no one has bothered with it
One of those things.
It's been around a long time (I think certainly since the Middle Ages, as Ibn Khaldoun was saying something like it in his Muqaddamah). It's one point of view, and one that has a lot of weight especially in areas of the globe with abnormally long daylight. Alternative ideas say similar things (e.g. fast according to the nearest Muslim country on the same longitude - that would be Morocco or western Algeria for the British Isles).
