Emunah and Bitachon

**Emunah** (faith) and **Bitachon** (trust) are foundational Jewish concepts representing distinct but related spiritual states. **Emunah** is defined as the intellectual **knowledge and belief** that Hashem created and continuously manages all of Creation, including the minutiae of daily life. It is a state of understanding that God is involved in the big picture and local details, akin to the Rambam’s definition of faith as knowing the Creator exists and runs the world.

**Bitachon** is the **active trust and reliance** on Hashem’s goodness, wisdom, and care for the individual. While Emunah is the theoretical belief that God is in charge, Bitachon is the emotional and practical confidence that He is good and wise, leading a person to rely on Him rather than their own efforts alone. The **Ramban** describes Emunah as the tree and Bitachon as its fruit; one can have Emunah (like Pharaoh, who believed in God but rebelled) without Bitachon, but true Bitachon requires a deep-seated Emunah.

In practice, **Emunah** is a constant background state of being, whereas **Bitachon** is often an active response aroused during times of uncertainty, danger, or need. **Chabad Chassidic thought** emphasizes that while Emunah accepts that whatever happens is ultimately good, Bitachon demands a trust that tangible, revealed good will manifest. The **Chazon Ish** and other authorities teach that Bitachon is the concrete application of Emunah, transforming belief into a lived experience of security and optimism.
