In his cultural and historical critiques, Catholic author E. Michael Jones argues that the American frontier system—driven by an "English Protestant operating system" of capitalism and legal bureaucracy—stripped Daniel Boone of his lifestyle, land, and foundational sense of religious order. [1]
Jones uses Daniel Boone as a historical paradigm to contrast Catholic and Protestant/Calvinist frameworks of settlement, expansion, and "Logos" (rational or divine order): [1]
  • The Conflict of Operating Systems: Jones posits that America's expansion was built on an English Protestant/Calvinist framework, which he equates with state-sponsored capitalism and rigid legalism. He contrasts this with French and Spanish Catholic colonization, which relied on sacramental frameworks and assimilation (such as intermarriage with Native Americans). [1]
  • Displacement by "Law": According to Jones, Boone lived by an organic relationship to the land based on exploration and survival. However, as the newly independent United States established its legal and economic framework, Boone was systematically stripped of his land claims by lawyers, speculation, and complex titling systems. Jones argues that this aggressive legalistic capitalism effectively "took away" the simple, frontier-based communal order Boone lived by. [1, 2]
  • Loss of the "Sacred Wilderness": Jones argues that the American system reduced nature and human life to mere transactions, commodities, and contracts. For Boone—who was raised in a fractured Quaker background and later held highly individualized Christian beliefs—the imposition of this aggressive, secularized capitalistic system displaced the religious and natural harmony he sought on the frontier. Boone ultimately fled the United States entirely, moving to Spanish (Catholic) controlled Missouri in 1799 to escape the American system. [1, 2, 3, 4]
