Are cannon fodder who die in unsuccessful imperial wars "losers"? Well, they lost their lives. Did Trump call them "losers"? Does it matter? Wasn't the draft-dodging of Bill Clinton precisely to avoid becoming such a "loser"? Since we all die, it is better to die for a worthwhile cause than to die of a ripe old age, if we care to be remembered for something other than living to a ripe old age.
Imagine if Socrates had accepted the option of exile rather than death in Athens. Would he even be remembered at all? If Christ had successfully defended himself against the charge of blasphemy, would he have been worshipped as the co-equal of the supreme and eternal Abrahamic God who created the Universe for 2000 years? Politics is walking the thin line of self-preserving caution and the taking of calculated risks.
