Kevin N. Flatt is a Professor of History and Associate Dean of Humanities at Redeemer University in Ontario, Canada, and a Research Fellow at the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Religion, Culture, and Societal Futures.  He is the author of Secularization, Social Order, and World History: Toward a Global Perspective, a book that presents a new framework for understanding secularization by introducing the concept of "sacred-social order."

From Flatt’s perspective, sacred-social orders are systems in which all aspects of human life—marriage, government, calendar, and more—are aligned with suprahuman purposes and authorities.  He argues that the secularization of Western societies was not simply a decline of religion, but a revolutionary break from these sacred-social orders and an attempt to build a new secular order based solely on human foundations.

The book challenges the idea that "religion" and "secular" are universal categories, showing instead that they are modern, Western constructs. As the secular order has spread globally, it has triggered movements to restore sacred-social order—movements often misinterpreted as mere religious revivals or a "clash of civilizations."

Flatt’s work bridges sociology, history, religious studies, and philosophy to offer a global, cross-cultural account of secularization and its discontents, providing a critical alternative to traditional Western-centric narratives.

What does Flatt say about Islam and sharia?

Kevin N. Flatt does not focus specifically on Islam or Sharia in the available search results. However, his central concept of "sacred-social order" provides a framework through which Islamic societies and the role of Sharia could be analyzed.

Flatt argues that premodern societies—including those in the Islamic world—operated as sacred-social orders, where institutions like government, law, marriage, and the calendar were aligned with suprahuman (divine) purposes.  In this view, Sharia would represent a core component of a sacred-social order, structuring social and political life according to divine authority.

His work suggests that secularization is not merely the decline of religion, but a revolutionary break from such integrated sacred orders.  When applied to Muslim-majority societies, this implies that movements advocating for the restoration of Sharia are not simply religious revivals, but responses to the imposition of Western secular order—attempts to reclaim a holistic sacred-social framework.

While Flatt does not directly engage with Islamic jurisprudence or the concept of an "Islamic secular" (as discussed by scholars like Sherman Jackson), his theory supports understanding Sharia-based governance as part of a broader civilizational resistance to secular modernity, rather than mere fundamentalism.
