Simon Sheppard on Neurotic Suspension

A much simpler, and thus better, example of ‘Bystander Apathy’ occurred at a Rotterdam boating lake on 21 August 1993 (the incident features in The Tyranny of Ambiguity; 1st ed. fn. p. 250, 2nd ed. p. 395). A Moroccan girl, Naima Quaghmiri, 9 years old, fell out of a boat in the middle of the shallow lake and noisily drowned. The other girl in the boat, a year or two older, tried to hold her above the water but failed, while approximately two hundred spectators watched. One of the crowd even made a video recording of it. As in the Kitty Genovese case, subsequent newspaper articles discussed whether witnesses should be legally obliged to act, or punished for failing to do so.

The essential mechanism operating here is Neurotic Suspension: being suspended or frozen in a state of neurotic confusion. (Neurosis is here defined in Pavlovian terms as the stress induced when a single stimulus evokes two or more distinct responses.) Neurotic Suspension appears to be particularly strong when collectively expressed, in common with much other crowd behaviour.

The purpose of compassion in a nation state

It has been said that the state is the most organised form of criminal enterprise.

As citizens of a state, we can only as members suggest ways of running this criminal enterprise more efficiently.

If we want it to be run more humanely, this too can be accomplished, provided humanity is not inconsistent with efficiency and tends to increase group solidarity, or in the case of nation states, social cohesion within that state.

While men tend to see mercy as a means to an end and would use it rationally, women on the other hand tend to see the expression of compassion as an end in itself, for compassion is a feminine virtue and as women they would wish to express themselves in this way, even at the expense of men or the long term national interest.  

That is why women must not be given too much power.  

When you are strong, be good and you will become great.

When you are great but cease to be good you will become weak again.  

Being good has everything to do with accepting the Truth and not denying it.  

Denial, as we know, is a feminine vice.

The subtext of liberalism

Indiscriminate compassion and endless tolerance of all that is toxic to society is the part and parcel of liberal ideology is an expression of contempt by liberals to those to those less fortunate than they. They can afford to be compassionate, civilised, humane, and tolerant, in their nice houses, leafy surburbs, good schools and low-crime neighbourhoods.

This is the subtext of what a liberal is saying when he or she prates on about tolerance and compassion:

"People like us can afford to prate on about compassion and tolerance! Screw you, you stupid poor f*ckers who have to live cheek by jowl with foreigners you resent for coming here to take the bread out of your mouths, who get mugged, raped, burgled and murdered by vermin, while we liberals say we feel sorry for the PERPETRATORS just to push your face further into the poo!

Realism v Idealism, Conservatism v Liberalism

Conservatives are realists.

Liberals are idealists.

The road to hell is paved with the good intentions of idealists.

Idealists shun the truth as ugly and banal.

Realists know the truth will set them free.

Are liberals good for society or are they a cancer of irrationality who hypocritically spout their ideology of indiscriminate compassion and moral relativism and pretend they help when in fact they harm?

Doesn't he know that this is only encouraging them?

First, someone thought a few disabled parking spaces here and there would be kind and considerate. Now, our supermarkets car parks have empty disabled spaces that the able bodied dare not use for fear of being fined.

Do we really want an increase in people claiming disabled privileges? Is it in the national interest to encourage the parasitical behaviour of the less productive at the expense of the more productive?

Cameron does, because he thinks they are electorally significant and increasing in number. No doubt they are a suitable audience to demonstrate his "Conservative compassion"?

These people are quite organised too, trawling the Internet for comments unflattering to the disabled and sending them hate mail. I have received quite a few in my time and expect to receive more.

Well, let me tell you this: the Indonesians will get richer and the British poorer, if we carry on like that.

When we get poor enough to be Indonesians, I suppose we will finally junk the insanity of privileging the disabled. They should be tolerated and treated compassionately, certainly, but not privileged and given a sense of entitlement.

There was a ridiculous discussion on Radio 4 last week at 9am on a weekday last week, consisting entirely of women discussing ante-natal screening. One of them, disabled and arrogant beyond belief, was objecting to this practice because it meant that fewer people like her would be born, because it was discriminatory.

Strangely, no one pointed out that most sane people don't want to be disabled or want a disabled child. If I were disabled, I wouldn't be wearing it as a badge of honour and lording it over everyone.

Even more strangely, she was treated with a kind of exaggerated deference that frankly made me feel quite nauseous, confirming to me that we are now suffering from a terminal form of national dementia.
