Liberalism was a French Revolutionary reaction against the Catholic Church promoting totalitarian Christianity

Why the liberal West is a Christian creation by John Gray      https://www.newstatesman.com/dominion-making-western-mind-tom-holland-revie

But of course. Our identity is created by what happened to us and what we did about it.

In Pontius Pilate (1961), a Borges-like fiction by the French literary theorist and former surrealist Roger Caillois, the Roman governor of Judea who ordered the death by crucifixion of Jesus instead releases him under the protection of imperial legionaries. The charismatic Jewish prophet carries on preaching and dies at a great age. He leaves a reputation for holiness, and pilgrimages are made to his grave. But because of Pilate’s decision, made after a night of sleepless wavering, there is no Christianity.

No sacrifice of his life by Jesus, no being worshipped for 2000 years as the co-equal of the supreme and eternal Abrahamic God by idolatrous and blasphemous Christians who obviously don't fear God's wrath because they are only pretending to be Christian and are more invested in their idolatry and blasphemy. If they did believe in the Abrahamic God, they would want to obey His laws and fear the consequences of not so doing. After all, the Ten Commandments do forbid idolatry and blasphemy, and Christians must be aware of this.

If Tom Holland is right, there would be no modern secular civilisation either. The liberal West is a creation of the Christian religion, and continues to assert that its values are universal even though it has rejected the faith that inspired them:

Liberalism originates from the French Revolution and the French Revolution represented a rejection of the monarchy and its right of divine rule and the religion associated with it - Christianity.

Christianity, it seemed, had no need of actual Christians for its assumptions still to flourish… The trace elements of Christianity continued to infuse people’s morals and presumptions so utterly that many failed even to detect their presence. Like dust particles so fine as to be invisible to the naked eye, they were breathed in equally by everyone: believers, atheists and those who never paused to think about religion.

The Noahide laws are the universal minimum standard of morality for righteous gentiles and therefore expect advanced civilisations to adhere to all or some of the Noahide laws. It is absurdly chauvinistic to assume that morality is unique to Christianity when Christianity itself was derived from Judaism. We already know Christianity is a created religion created by a heretical Jew to worship another as the co-equal of the supreme and eternal Abrahamic God who created the Universe, making Christianity not only idolatrous but guilty of Supreme Blasphemy. After all, if you wanted to blaspheme against the Abrahamic God, you can't go any further than to worship a man convicted of blasphemy against the Abrahamic God as the co-equal of the Abrahamic God, can you?  https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/the-noahide-laws/

Secular liberals dismiss Christianity as a fairy tale, but their values and their view of history remain essentially Christian. The Christian story tells of the son of God being put to death on a cross. In the Roman world, this was the fate of criminals and those who challenged imperial power. Christianity brought with it a moral revolution. The powerless came to be seen as God’s children, and therefore deserving of respect as much as the highest in society. History was a drama of sin and redemption in which God – acting through his son – was on the side of the weak.

We can only wonder at why Constantine decided to run the Roman Empire under Christianity. Perhaps he saw the Abrahamic God as more simpatico to more imperial subjects than Jupiter Optimus Maximus.

Modern progressive movements have renewed this sacred history, though it is no longer God but “humanity” – or its self-appointed representatives – that speaks for the powerless. In many ways, the West today is more fiercely self-righteous than it was when it was professedly Christian. The social justice warriors who denounce Western civilisation and demand that its sins be confessed and repented would not exist without the moral inheritance of Christianity. As Tom Holland writes, “Had it been otherwise, then no one would ever have got woke.”

It is interesting that Holland is assuming that being "woke" is a good thing rather than yet another sign of the galloping degeneracy of the Western matriarchy.

He tells us his view of Christianity changed as a result of his study of the ancient world. As a teenager, he was like many others in seeing the biblical God as “the po-faced enemy of liberty and fun”. When he read Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776), he was happy to accept that the triumph of Christianity meant “an ‘age of superstition and credulity’”. Unlike many, Holland did not stay stuck in a posture of adolescent scorn for the religion in which he had been reared. Twenty years of reading and writing about classical antiquity wore away his youthful admiration for pagan culture.

Caesar killed a million Gauls and enslaved a million more. Across the Roman world, wailing infants could be found on the roadside, on rubbish heaps or in drains, left there to perish. Female infants who were rescued would be raised as slaves or sold to brothels. It wasn’t simply Roman callousness that Holland was repelled by. It was “the complete lack of any sense that the poor or the weak might have the slightest intrinsic value”. His values were not those of classical civilisation, he realised, still less of “human nature”. They were the values of the modern West’s Christian past.

Holland does not seem aware that more than a millennium before the codification of the Geneva Conventions, most of the fundamental categories of protection could be found in Islamic teachings. Or, he was aware of this, but chose to ignore it. https://www.middleeasteye.net/big-story/islamic-law-and-rules-war

As Holland shows, the triumph of Christianity was a rupture in Western civilisation. There is nothing at all self-evident about the equal intrinsic worth of all human beings or the inherent preciousness of individual persons. These values – which secular thinkers nowadays take for granted – were placed at the heart of the Western world by Christianity. (Holland says comparatively little about how they developed within Judaism.) In the final analysis, liberal humanism is a footnote to the Bible.

Western imperialism culturally appropriates whatever it wants from Jews and Muslims and then takes credit for them, and those who are not victors and do not write history must suffer as they must.

Holland focuses on the story of Jesus’s crucifixion, which by showing God in the form of a broken and tormented human being upended the pagan worship of vitality and beauty. But if anything, this may understate the moral revolution that Christianity accomplished. The nature of morality itself changed. There is nothing in Aristotle about humility or brotherly love. In the Ethics he celebrates the “great-souled man” contemplating the universe and admiring his own magnificence. Altruism – nowadays commonly viewed as the heart of morality – was not much prized in the ancient world. Followers of Stoicism were encouraged to perform public duties, and Epicureans instructed others in how to be happy. But helping suffering human beings through acts of self-sacrifice was not required by morality, or especially admired. The fact that Christians were ready to be martyred for their faith marked them out to the Roman authorities as practitioners of a strange and sinister cult.

Martyrdom was not first practised by Christians, but by Jews. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-sacrifice_in_Jewish_law

Holland comes into his own when he shows how Christianity created the values of the modern Western world. Not all Christians accepted the idea of original sin. Pelagius (AD 360-418) believed the only reason human beings act badly is that they have been accustomed to doing wrong from childhood – a view repeated in modern times by generations of liberals who have never heard of the early British theologian. Holland goes on to tell how the medieval French scholastic Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was accused of heresy for his assertion that God’s world was rational and governed by laws that humans could understand, only for this belief to inspire the founding of universities all over Christendom. As much as any Enlightenment thinker, it was Abelard who infused the European mind with the spirit of progress.

I really don't think universities are an exclusively Christian invention. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_higher-learning_institutions

In later sections of the book, Holland tells of the horror of the conquistadores when they realised the scale of the Mexican practice of human sacrifice, and of a 16th-century experiment in theocratic communism in the German city of Münster. He examines the remorseless exploration of the predatory moral consequences of mechanistic materialism by the Marquis de Sade – an Enlightenment thinker who really did reject Christian values. He examines the anti-Christianity of Lenin and Hitler and the anti-Nazi Christianity of JRR Tolkien, the Christian character of John Lennon’s atheism and the role of Christianity in shaping the moral culture that gave birth to the #MeToo movement. There are many, many more brilliant insights and vignettes.

Because Christianity was not enough of an opium of the masses, they fell prey to Nazism and Communism. As for #MeToo, that was more a manifestation of promiscuous female victimhood after decades of sexually liberated feminism than Christian virtue, surely?

Dominion presents a rich and compelling history of Christendom. What makes the book riveting, though, is the devastating demolition job it does on the sacred history of secular humanism. Holland summarises this intellectual folk tale:

The triumph of the Church had been an abortion of everything that made for a humane and civilised society. Darkness had descended on Europe. For a millennium and more, popes and inquisitors had laboured to snuff out any spark of curiosity, or inquiry, or reason… That nothing in this narrative was true did not prevent it from becoming wildly popular.

It is a tediously familiar mythology that no amount of historical evidence is likely to dislodge. It was Christian bishops and theologians, as Holland points out, who opposed the enslavement of indigenous peoples in Latin America, and Aristotle who was invoked to defend it. Secular liberals will immediately point out that slavery was practised throughout Christendom during much of its history. Of course this is so, but the fact does not alter Holland’s central point. Even if Christianity in power sanctioned all manner of evils, it set a standard of goodness that simply did not exist in the pagan world.

"A standard of goodness that simply did not exist in the pagan world"? What about the Muslim world? And how are standards of goodness to be measured?

At the same time Christianity brought with it a new evil of its own. The very universality of the Christian message, its insistence that all human beings are equal in the sight of God, inspired a ferocious assault on other faiths. Christians made a claim to unique possession of the truth with no parallel in pagan religion, and the result was an unprecedented type of repression. As Holland writes: “A Church that proclaimed itself universal had, it seemed, no response to those who rejected it save persecution.” The rise of Christianity spelt the end for pagan toleration.

To be sure, the pagan world did not practise toleration in a modern sense. As the death of Socrates showed, there was no recognition of freedom of thought as any kind of human right. Yet Greco-Roman polytheism recognised that human beings need a variety of faiths, myths and illusions. Christianity destroyed this ancient tolerance, and in doing so inaugurated the modern world.

The Roman Empire had all the apparatus of state to enforce the totalitarianism of Christianity.

“Christianity spreads in two ways: through conversion and through secularisation.” This incisive observation, cited by Holland as coming from an unnamed Indian historian, encapsulates much of the argument of Dominion. Secular modernity is not the negation of Christendom but its continuation in another form. Bien-pensant atheists who bang on about how much more civilised we would be if only Christianity had not existed have not asked where their conception of civilisation came from. Nietzsche was closer to the truth. If you regret the rise of Christianity, you must regret the rise of liberalism, human rights and belief in progress as well.

Liberalism/The French Revolution was an understandable reaction to Christianity/the Catholic Church/the divine rule of monarchs.

Holland leaves the reader with a question. If the religion on which liberal values were based is dying out in the West, what future can these values have? He writes:

If secular humanism derives not from reason or from science, but from the distinctive course of Christianity’s evolution – a course that, in the opinion of growing numbers in Europe and America, has left God dead – then

Holland seems to be suggesting that liberal values cannot survive the collapse of their Christian foundations. This is not a view confined to Christian believers. The nihilistic French author Michel Houellebecq appears to be thinking along similar lines, as are some atheists and agnostics. Yet I think this misreads our situation.

Houellebecq is simply saying that Islam with its Book of Rules from God will move into the moral vacuum of Christianity that only relies on the hearsay evidence of mortal and fallible men about the sayings and doings of a revolutionary executed for blasphemy.

It may well be that liberal values as they were understood in the past are on the way out. But the source of their decline is more paradoxical than the mere loss of Christian belief. Beyond the West, Christianity is undergoing a revival. In post-communist Russia, for example, the Orthodox Church has re-emerged strongly. But the distinctive pattern of development through which Christianity generated liberal values in western Europe was not replicated in eastern Orthodoxy, and there is nothing liberal about resurgent Christianity in Russia. The same is true, for different reasons, in Africa. In the West, liberalism is not fading away with Christian belief but becoming more zealous and dogmatic. Ironically, today’s ultra-liberals have more than a little in common with the Christians who destroyed the pluralistic tolerance of the ancient world. Policing opinion, shutting down debate and bent on extirpating any beliefs and values other than their own, they are like the early Christians in seeing themselves as actors in an unfolding story of sin and redemption.

It is a puzzle why Holland equates the success of Christianity with its resemblance to Liberalism. It would be like Nazis rejoicing at the idea of their party becoming more Jewish.

Roger Caillois’s fiction suggests a truer view of history. The rise of Christianity was an accident, and the liberal West a spin-off. Of course the hand of God can be seen in the decision Pontius Pilate made to have Jesus crucified. In recognition of Pilate’s pivotal role in the Christian story, he is canonised as a saint in the Coptic and Ethiopian churches. But unless these and later events were providentially ordered, the triumph of Christianity was fortuitous. If any one of an uncountable number of contingencies had not occurred, Europe might still be shaped by a mix of polytheistic cults and classical philosophy and Christianity would never have spread across the globe.

If the Abrahamic God exists and is in control of His Creation, then He may have allowed three global Christian empires to rise and flourish for His own reasons.

Could it be that Judaism was ploughing, Christianity was sowing and Islam harvesting?

Such a world might be better, in some respects, than the one that actually exists; but it would lack the vision of human equality and moral progress that formed the modern West. If they read Dominion, as they certainly should, secular liberals might pause to reflect that they acquired their deepest values by chance from a religion they despise.

Are the "deepest values" of secular liberals in fact some or most but not all of the Noahide laws?

The French Revolution finally comes to an end in 2020

The political and moral system of the West - liberalism - produces matriarchy. Putin pronounced it "obsolete" in June 2019. Trump identified himself as nationalist in October 2019. The 2020 US Presidential elections is really about whether men and women think they should be married parents and nationalists or remain the sexually liberated bachelors and bitter spinsters of liberalism.

'I am a nationalist': Trump's embrace of controversial label sparks uproar

Donald Trump denounces 'globalism' in nationalist address to UN

French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s Islam

Did You Know? Napoleon Was A Serious Admirer Of Islam

The French Civil Code originated from sharia

Nationalism cannot exist without patriarchy and matriarchy is the product of feminism which rode into town on the coat-tails of liberal egalitarianism.

Liberalism is one of the dangerous ideas of the French Revolution which is about to finally hit the buffers after 300 years.

Choosing to restore the patriarchy means choosing to give up liberalism and its matriarchy

If you want patriarchy, you must logically and necessarily choose a theocracy to restore, protect or establish it. Deciding whether you want to live in a matriarchy or a patriarchy is therefore a political and moral choice requiring the sacrifice of what you think is your human right to have sex with anyone who is not your spouse of the opposite sex.

Why the law under liberalism is an ass

The law under liberalism is an ass, but why doesn't Christianity protect Western nations from gay marriage? Because it is kaput. Can any society survive without practising marriage and family values? The fact is that a matriarchy is a society whose members mostly do not practise marriage. All advanced civilisations are patriarchies, and all primitive, declining, extinct or soon to be extinct societies are matriarchies. If matriarchy is the problem, then patriarchy must be the solution. If patriarchy is the destination, then theocracy must be the vehicle. The kind of theocracy to choose would be one based in divinely revealed scripture eg the Torah or the Koran, because everything else is changeable or would fall out of fashion. Both Jews and Muslims are agreed that Christians are idolatrous because they worship an executed revolutionary as the co-equal of the supreme and eternal Abrahamic God.

Since the West became great as a Christian nation practising patriarchal moral values, it is time to consider its replacement, because no society can survive without a religion to bind its members together.  Religion comes from the Latin "religare", which means "to bind". Religion is therefore the means that will obtain your society social cohesion and the building blocks of a stable society are families in which both husband and wife live together rearing their children in a loving relationship. The golden thread that runs through all the five world religions is respect for the practice of marriage and family values. Christianity no longer maintains the minimum standard of sexual morality that makes couples marry before they have children. The link between criminality and illegitimacy has been well-established over the ages.

If you believed in the Abrahamic God, you would find it easy to accept that Christians would be cursed by God for practising the idolatry He has specifically and explicitly forbidden in His Ten Commandments for 2000 years without showing any signs of remorse.

Even if you did not believe in God, you should be able to see how idolatry leads to self-worship because idolatry implicitly rejects the rule of God's laws found in the Torah or the Koran. Self-worship would lead ineluctably to self-destruction, which was what happened to Narcissus. It is not for nothing that a mental disorder was named after him. How long could any civilisation survive if both the governed (who will soon become ungovernable) and their government suffered from Narcissistic Personality Disorder?

The point is that practising idolatry means that we eventually fall into self-worship and therefore what happened to Narcissus will also happen to us and our civilisation if we reject Truth, Logic and Morality in favour of our own emotional, irrational and immoral nihilistic preferences.

Is the degenerate feminist gentile weak and stupid because he is suffering from the double whammy of a failed religion and political system?

The question is why the gentile in his own land allows Jewish organisations to bring unwanted migrants into their country.  To be weak and stupid is to invite exploitation and abuse. There are plenty of gentile liberals encouraging Jews to be liberal. This is a matter to be resolved between gentiles themselves, surely? Obviously there will be white Western gentiles who want to co-opt non-white and Jewish minorities in their country to their political cause eg Sarah Jeong. The liberals being what they are would recruit far and wide amongst women, Jews and minorities while the Conservatives would be standoffish and exclusive with the predictable consequences of having a small narrow base of left-behind impoverished old angry technophobic white men regarded as bores even by others of their ilk from the lower strata of society with low standards of sexual morality and behaviour with addictions problems repellent to women of any race.

The kindest way to regard Jews and Judaism is this: think of liberal democracy as a toxic marinade and Judaism as a steak marinating in it with Jewish leaders now too morally poisoned by their moral environment to feel it to be their religious duty to remind the gentile when his laws fall dangerously below the minimum moral standards of the Noahide laws.

2:29:00  "Isn't Christianity infinitely flexible in political terms? Christianity was a key part of Europeans conquering the world and having strong identities as Europeans,  Englishmen.Frenchmen or Germans and Christianity can also be an important part of the desire to contract Christendom and fill it with people who are hostile to Christianity. It is almost infinitely flexible in political terms."

The New Testament states nothing clearly, unlike the Koran, that is why you think it is infinitely flexible.

Christianity is now indistinguishable from Liberalism.

It is not quite so easy to distort the Koran once you control its interpretation.

Not for nothing has it been said that Christianity is the religion of religion and slaves, doubtless because of its ambiguity.

Ambiguity is a feminine stratagem, while men who make the rules like to state the rules clearly and men subject to those rules also prefer the rules to be stated clearly so that  they can order their lives around these rules.

Islam is the more masculine religion because it is supposed to be the directly revealed Word of God revealed by a successful leader of fighting men, while Christianity is necessarily confusing and ambiguous because it took Christianity 300 years to establish itself with several different accounts of the deed and speeches of an executed revolutionary anxious to give God what is God's and what is Caesar's to Caesar, whatever that meant, and whatever that took to get himself out of trouble with the Roman authorities.

No honest reading of the New Testament would give any reasonable lawyer the desire to base a theocracy on its stupid stories and vague extremist pronouncements. The Koran, on the other hand, naturally lends itself to legislation.

Only the most chauvinistic cultural Christian would continue to insist that co-opted and corrupted Christianity is superior even as he disbelieves the Trinity but refuses to read either the New Testament or the Koran because he already feels sufficiently "informed" by his hatred of Muslims.

Jews have been identified as a source of immigration encouraging leftism by the angry white non-Muslim gentile male. The kindest thing to think is that Jews who become liberal think gentiles want them to be liberal. Could this just be a terrible misunderstanding? If you stay with a quarrelling couple and take sides, expect to be physically removed when you supported the losing side. Women are liberal, men are Conservative. Jews have been known to adopt feminine stratagems of victimhood as a means of acquiring status in their host countries while adopting overwhelming force when it comes to dealing with unwanted residents in Israel. Is this the fault of Jews if the gentile is so easily exploited and afraid of his women who don't care about the concerns of gentile men, these women who keep voting for pro-immigration parties, for leftist parties who want immigrants to vote for them by giving them passports?  All political parties in the West have the strategy of soliciting the female vote because the female vote is the key to getting voted into office, followed by the most powerful minority of all, the Jews. This is predictably resented. The solution is so obvious: become a one party state and disenfranchise non-taxpayers.

The solution as I see it is to separate the good Jews from the bad Jews. There is nothing liberal or sexually liberated about Judaism. It also an abuse of hospitality - whether you be Jew or gentile - to be generous to people your hosts would consider unwanted intruders at your host's expense.

If you lose even when you win by playing by the rules and there is no longer any rule of law, then violence seems the logical next move. Trump won because he showed concern on immigration and even now the HIAS are trying to obstruct him when he is only trying to fulfill his compaign promises. They are doubtless also plotting his impeachment and assassination.

If we are of the view that things will have to get worse before they get better, then we will have to regard things getting worse as a sign of things getting better.

If we are of the view that things will have to get worse before they get better, then we will have to regard things getting worse as a sign of things getting better.

Even now Jews refuse to consider the grievances of gentiles. Anyone presuming to inform them of their grievances are told they are antisemites who should fuck off.

And then I was unfriended.

If we are not guilty of any act of violence, there is no moral reason why we should not say "We told you so and look what happened because you wouldn't listen. People will only play by the rules if they think they have a reasonable chance of winning if they do so, but you have rigged everything and the rule of law no longer operates. Do not be surprised then if some people become angry enough to take the law into their own hands when they already know that the legal and political system is kaput and rigged against them. If you already know people are so upset that they voted Trump because they have had enough of immigration, why are you obstructing him at every move and trying to import ever greater numbers of immigrants?"

You must have a really shit political system to let your minorities do this to you without any hope of fixing it.  Why not admit it is shit?

Your religion must be kaput if it none of your leaders except Trump is trying to represent the interests of the beta male. Why not admit it is kaput? Why not take a more Jewish view of suffering and learn from it, rather than continue being women in denial?  https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/suffering

To repeat: your religion and political system must be utter fucking shite if your minorities and elites can do this to you without any prospect of the problem being fixed.

Is it because Jews are so very clever, or is it because people who identify as Christian do actually have shit for brains?

Hey, maybe if you admitted that Christianity is kaput and democracy should be taken out with the trash, something might just change?

Otherwise, the white gentile male will be like his women: passively complaining waiting for his knight in shining armour.

"The Jews did it to us." Why did you let them do it? "Because we have have no moral agency, no leaders and no chain of command that will trigger any focused action to solve the problem because our religion and political system are no longer fit for purpose."

43:00  Jews get more left-wing as they get older? I know an elderly woman who voted to remain because EUrocrap represented her glorious youth.

45:00 Degenerate sex crap will always provoke a wave of self-loathing so intense it will spill over into violence. I seem to remember a book by Anthony Parsons who was describing the same thing happening in Iran before the Revolution.

https://www.nytimes.com/1985/04/21/books/doomed-shah.html

Essentially (and in my view correctly), he argues that the Shah never understood how deeply resented were the changes he had wrought in trying to move Iran from feudalism to high technology in a generation, how much the young nationalists and the Shiite leaders hated what they saw as the political, cultural and economic colonization of their country by the West, mainly by the United States. I never heard it expressed better than by a young revolutionary of my acquaintance, who said that the trouble with the Shah and his circle was, ''They can tell you all about Chartres or the Colosseum, but they know nothing about the mosques of Isfahan.''

Bernard Shaw:

"A healthy nation is as unconscious of its nationality as healthy man of his bones. But if you break a nation's nationality, it will think of nothing else but getting it set again."

I offer a solution to Mohammed Hijab's Problems with Liberalism

http://www.salam.org.uk/2018/10/01/the-problems-with-liberalism/

Liberalism, like many other ideologies, has existed in different political contexts. Many of these contexts have had contradictory self-identified starting points. Today, the term ‘liberal democracy’ is used to refer to most (if not all) political systems that claim to be ‘liberal’. However, it is conceivable to envisage illiberal democracies or undemocratic liberal states. One does not have to go too far back in history to identify such examples of this, as liberalism existed with colonialism since the latter’s inception. Even more shockingly, self-identified ‘liberal’ states – such as France and the United States – had institutionalised programs of slavery in place until close to the beginning of the 19th century. To be clear, this is not an argument against liberalism, but instead an informative historical reading on the conduct of liberalism throughout history. A clear distinction needs to be made between what liberalism is and how politicians (who claim to be liberals) may have contradicted its principles. It is important to note that liberalism is being operationalised, in many ways, like religion. People who consider themselves ‘liberal’ usually believe in concepts such as ‘freedom of speech/expression’ in as much the same way as ancient peoples might have believed in Zeus or Athena, or as later people might have believed in Ram or Buddha. Liberalism will be understood best by the initial thinkers and theorists who have propounded its theories through their rationale. Society is also important to consider but only to the extent that it has decided to accept or reject a certain political philosophy.

The problem with liberalism is that it has no scripture or official handbook. Therefore liberalism will always be whatever the leader of the liberal party says it is.

Has anyone asked why the leader of the Conservative Party was talking about "musculiar liberalism"?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscular_liberalism

Is Conservatism really Liberalism too?

It would appear so.

https://thevoiceofreason-ann.blogspot.com/2015/12/anne-mcelvoy-on-british-conservatism.html

It would appear that gay marriage is now part of Conservatism too since Cameron legalised it.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/david-cameron-ignored-tory-mps-and-his-mum-over-legalisation-of-gay-marriage-10516205.html

Liberalism has now "advanced" to such a stage that organisations promoting sodomy - a sexual offence according to quran.com/4/16 - are now in a position to give prizes to British Prime Ministers and a British Prime Minister would think nothing of accepting a prize from them.

But why is liberalism so attractive to contemporary peoples, especially in a postmodern Western context?

Because the only thing liberalism means now in the 21st century is sexual liberation from the rules of marriage and good parenting.

Sexual corruption leads to moral corruption, moral corruption leads to intellectual corruption, and intellectual corruption leads to the loss of ability to use truth, reason and morality to solve and avoid problems.

If you ever wonder why obvious solutions are not being implemented to solve longstanding social problems, this is the reason.

By the way, postmodern means "under feminist hegemony"

But where both men were nonconformists, non-Trinitarian (in the case of Mill), and even non-Christian, religiosity in the Victorian period began to decline.

https://thevoiceofreason-ann.blogspot.com/2017/08/melanie-phillips-psychoanalyses-british.html

Melanie Phillips:

During the past six decades, Britain has been systematically hollowing out its own culture, for two intimately related reasons: a loss of its national identity and purpose, and the crumbling of religious belief that underpinned its moral codes.

On the happiness principle of utlitarianism, we as individuals and nations are never really sure about the wisdom of enjoying our pleasures because present pleasures unwisely such as drugs and spending beyond our means often entail future suffering.

It would appear that history has many lessons to teach us that enjoying the pleasures of drink, lust, gambling and usury and other forbidden pleasures of the Bible and Koran tend to end in the decline and fall of your civilisation.

If the individual is protected from refraining from doing certain things based on his religious principles then it must surely follow that nations - which are after all only lands with individuals - would also benefit from following these religious principles.

Judaism has undeniably helped Jews remain in existence even without a homeland for 2000 years.

Since it cannot be denied that both Christianity and Islam were derived from Judaism, the benefits of obeying the laws of the Abrahamic God are undeniable.

Those of us who live in the West would know that it is no longer Christian. Its unofficial religion is sexual liberation from the rules of marriage which have the effect of undermining the institution of marriage and the family. Western Man who is now so under the thumb of immoral women who will accuse him of a historic sexual offence to silence him when he tries to mobilise against the liberals and feminists that many men are as good as guilty of a historic sexual offence the moment they are accused and subjected to trial by media.

Sadly for Western Man, he is now so forgetful of his Judeo-Christian heritage that it no longer occurs to him to invoke the principle in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy%2019%3A15&version=NKJV even when accused of a historic sexual offence.

Egalitarianism is superficially appealing precisely because it is a polite fiction.

It was egalitarianism that let in feminism whose stated purpose is to destroy the patriarchy. It is of course the Abrahamic faiths that promote patriarchal moral values that enable thriving nations to become empires.

The lesson to be learned from the Sex Revolution is actually an old one, if we know what happened to the Israelites when they were seduced by the Moabite women.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Numbers%2025&version=NET

What I mean to say again is that neither Liberalism nor Conservatism has any scripture or official handbook. This explains why men like Nigel Farage and Sargon of Akkad call themselves Classical Liberals when what they mean is that they are Eurosceptic Thatcherites, a term which will become increasingly meaningless as people forget about the late Margaret Thatcher. Because neither Conservatism nor Liberalism have either a scripture or official handbook, these ideologies have neither any stated principles nor any internal consistency. If the Conservative and Labour Party still represent anything, they represent narrow class interests whose leaders are more interested in bribing us with our own money to be voted into office than any concern for the long tern national interest. This is obviously unsustainable.

The principle of parliamentary sovereignty also means that this country has the principle of not having any principles, which surely cannot be a good idea.

It cannot be a good idea to say that all you ever did in your history is your religion and resolve to keep changing it whenever expedient.

A philosophical case can be made for a theocracy without necessarily believing in God if you agree with the following propositions:

1) Because Jews remain in existence as a disinct people despite 2000 years of being without their homeland and managed to get back their homeland, Judaism has served them very well indeed.

2) Because Christianity and Islam were derived from Islam, these religions were an attempt to adapt Judaism for gentiles.

3) Because the West is now promoting gay marriage globally, we know that Christianity has failed.

4) Because Temple Judaism had and Christianity has a corruptible clergy, it was only a matter of time before the corrupt clergy failed to maintain morality and in practice ignored its own stated religious principles.

5) Because the closest thing to a clergy in Islam is the judiciary, legal decisions that are argued over and appealed against would be subjected to greater scrutiny. This means any corruption would be more quickly noticed and dealt with than when corrupt clergy dilute principles and ignore their religious obligations.

6) Because the least any self-respecting religion should be able to do is protect the practice of marriage and family values for the purpose of remaining in existence as a people, it is obvious Christianity has failed in the West and that the West is as Christian as a human skeleton used to be human.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/2285670/Most-children-of-British-mothers-born-out-of-wedlock.html

7) Because the UK has been a matriarchy for nearly 50 years, it is necessary as a matter of urgency to denounce, challenge and defeat it if we wish to reverse the degeneracy it has resulted in.
https://thevoiceofreason-ann.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-british-matriarchy-was-established.html

8) Because Christianity is no longer fit for the purpose of maintaining morality, Islam is the obvious choice, though what form it should take would be predictably disputed. Secular Koranism would be my recommendation because it does not require anyone to convert to Islam, only acknowledge the logic of the above propositions and act on it. It is envisaged that belief will come to future generations once all the necessary laws are in place.

How is Islam obviously superior to liberalism? Because even atheists cannot deny that the Abrahamic faiths have been around longer than Communism, Liberalism, Nazism, Fascism, Socialism or Conservatism.

Since the purpose of the Abrahamic faiths is to create strong nations and empires, we really have no choice but to choose a replacement once we have acknowledged that both Christianity and liberal democracy have failed.

Why feminists are nihilists

The problem with people who don't believe in anything is people who won't risk anything to defend any principle - because they have none.

At the very least, we as reasoning humans should believe in the primacy of truth, logic and morality, even if we do not believe in God.

If through the exercise of our reasoning faculties we arrive at the conclusion that civilised life and the continuation of our tribe, national identity and civilisation is impossible without patriarchy and a religion that promotes marriage and family values, we are morally obliged to support patriarchy.

The world is divided between

1) people who see the point in supporting patriarchy and

2) those who refuse to do so because they are selfish nihilists with no intention or prospect of becoming married parents and who do not wish to make the sacrifice of adhering to the rules in a moral system necessary to keep their group in existence.

What about the people who refuse to even discuss this?

They would be those who are indifferent to the destruction of their own civilisation.

Who are these people?

They make up the Western liberal establishment ie those in academia, politics, the media and the judiciary.

Why won't they discuss any of these subjects or answer any questions?

Because they cannot answer our simple questions honestly without giving up their position and losing the argument.

National identity and National Consciousness

National identity is forged in the furnace of war and revolution. How else does one form of national identity replace another? Religion and political ideology (and change thereof as well as the culture produced by religion and politics) is the only source of national self-consciousness.

What is self-consciousness in the philosophical sense? When we realise we are different to other people and know for a fact that our interests are different to theirs. We know we are different to other people when we do things differently to other people for special reasons of our own. Jews are a good example of a people with a very developed by sense of group identity.

Democracy, liberalism and feminism are the sacred cows of the West. The consequence of this unholy trinity is that it leads to matriarchy, and a matriarchy is a primitive, declining and extinct society, or one that is about to become extinct. All the five world religions anyone has ever heard of is about protecting the patriarchy and promoting marriage and family values. Once your government stops doing that, you will become a matriarchy.

White men no longer wishing to live in a matriarchy saying they are tired of suffering the consequences of uncontrolled immigration seems a perfectly respectable political aspiration to me.

On cultural appropriation and why Islam is logically and necessarily better than liberalism

Harari claims that all large-scale human cooperation systems – including religions, political structures, trade networks and legal institutions – owe their emergence to Sapiens' distinctive cognitive capacity for fiction.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapiens:_A_Brief_History_of_Humankind

It seems Harari is saying that all religions are based on a fiction. But what about political ideologies claiming to trump and replace religion? They too are based on a particular narrative. Marxism, for example, claims that all workers of the world will unite and live in a workers' paradise. Nazism believed that Aryans will triumph over the Jews who had exploited German gentiles. Fascism believed that Italians who were descendants of the fallen Roman empire were capable of becoming successful imperialists again. But what does liberalism believe? It believes that ever greater enjoyment of individual freedom - especially sexual freedom - would result in ever greater human advancement.

These national narratives reminded me of a film The Greatest Story Ever Told. I am not sure if I have ever seen it or not. If I have it was a long time ago, but its title was memorable and I remember puzzling at its presumption.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greatest_Story_Ever_Told

Of course it was a kind of Western chauvinism which assumed that because their empire has the widest expanse in human history, their religion - Christianity - must therefore be the greatest story ever told.

Since Christianity is also Judaism for Gentiles, it is based on the God of the Chosen People whose God is the most powerful God conceivable.

After Christianity came Islam, which was another attempt at Judaism for Gentiles. It can be seen therefore that the development of the Abrahamic faiths is a tale of ever greater acts of serial cultural appropriation.

All national myths are based on a noble lie to make us feel good about ourselves so that our fellow nationals feel social cohesion and group solidarity and co-operate with each other acting on this belief. The Whig Interpretation of History is the liberal version of this myth. But it is the erroneous belief that liberalism is inerrant that is obviously untrue, as Butterfield points out.

What was the Whig interpretation of history, and why did Butterfield find it so objectionable? As summarized in his preface, it was "the tendency in many historians to write on the side of Protestants and Whigs, to praise revolutions provided they have been successful, to emphasise certain principles of progress in the past and to produce a story which is the ratification if not the glorification of the present." His particular targets were historical grand narratives in which the expansion of personal liberty and of parliamentary authority relative to the Crown served as the organizing principles of English national history from the 17th century forward. Despite his reticence about naming them, Butterfield clearly had in mind such luminaries as Thomas Babington Macaulay, William Stubbs, and G. M. Trevelyan as exemplars of this tradition. Such scholars, he said, habitually narrated the English past as a perennial struggle between the friends and enemies of progress, "of which the Protestants and whigs have been the perennial allies while Catholics and tories have perpetually formed obstruction." By judging such struggles through the lens of their own politics, he argued, these whig historians behaved as if "the voice of posterity is the voice of God and the historian is the voice of posterity."

https://www.historians.org/publications-and-directories/perspectives-on-history/september-2012/two-cheers-for-the-whig-interpretation-of-history

Instead of realising that the onward march of liberal progressivism is not necessarily inexorable and inevitable, Francis Fukuyama compounded on the error of the Whig interpretation of history with The End of History.

What we may be witnessing is not just the end of the Cold War, or the passing of a particular period of post-war history, but the end of history as such: that is, the end point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_End_of_History_and_the_Last_Man

Jews at least believe they will be punished if they sin even if they are God's Chosen People, preventing them getting too uppity. In fact, they know God continues to punish them, sending them murderous Arab terrorists to plague them for flouting God's laws. God surely must have intended Israel to exist as a theocracy. As we all know, Israel is not only not a theocracy, it is but the colonial outpost of a corrupt and declining world empire that is promoting global gay marriage and turning our global village into Sodom Gomorrah. If your non-white country has gay marriage, it means you must now be a US vassal state. President Tsai Ing-wen who legalised gay marriage in Taiwan is a childless spinster and men who allow a childless woman to rule over them are by that very fact advertising their emasculation.

83% of female MPs voted for gay marriage while only 48% of male MPs did. What does this say about feminism?

It is quite simply unimaginable that God if He exists would approve of Israel's existence and government. If God exists and has a trigger finger, it must be getting very itchy indeed.

Rabbi Mizrachi says assimilated liberal Jews are like the Golden Calf. Not only are they no better than goyim, they are practically Amalek.

The State of Israel does not have a civil marriage option and all state-recognised wedding ceremonies must be conducted by a cleric. However, it does recognise partnerships between same-sex spouses who register as living together.

Rabbi Mizrachi also talks about being comfortably numb.

The gay Israeli flag

Darwinism tells liberal atheists that they are more highly evolved than monotheists but it is people who take their religious principles seriously who mostly bother to have children after more carefully choosing their sex partners who must also be their spouse. They more carefully parent their children passing on their beliefs through marriage and family values.

There is a reason why patriarchies ie societies that practise marriage are in existence while matriarchies ie societies that openly flout the rule against extramarital sex are declining or extinct.

The stories we are told shape our beliefs and our actions are shaped by our beliefs. The success of our enterprises are of course dependent on our actions. We are more likely to succeed as people if we are are truthful, logical and moral.

The belief that God will punish us if we disobey His laws surely protects us more from the vicissitudes of life than the belief that our political beliefs are inerrant.

Feminism is the belief that men and women should be treated equally. Is this belief based on truth? Does it make our society function better as a result of implementing feminist policies? The consequence of this belief has increased social instability and caused rising crime with no prospect of correcting our errors under the current malfunctioning political system.

As for liberalism, its principles are really as indefinable as Conservatism. Liberalism and Conservatism would really be more accurately called "stuff Western governments have done after the founding of America". Western democracy is really the misunderstanding that justifying our existence by doubling down on the mistakes of the past and refusing to acknowledge its errors is in fact better than, say, Islam.

Anne McElvoy on British Conservaliberalism

The advantage of Islam is that - love it or hate it - it at least has its declared principles and those principles are contained in the Koran, available for free worldwide.

While not everyone of us enjoys playing Monopoly the fact that it has a set of official rules makes the game possible and its objects clear.

Who would want to play a game of Liberal Democracy that has no apparent rules and those in charge keep changing them while the game is still in play? If you are a heterosexual White Man who wants to become a father of legitimate offspring and properly parent them, you are supposed to continue agreeing to having your status progressively (pun intended) lowered in favour of women, sodomites, lesbians and foreigners from now till the end of time in the name of Transnational Progressivism and globalism, apparently. It makes no sense at all.

While I am neither white nor male, I can't help feeling I would rather live in a country where the men are acting rationally instead of being neurotic and too frightened to challenge feminism because they are lower in status than immoral women and too afraid of being accused of historic sexual offence to risk antagonising any woman at all. It makes me uneasy indeed knowing that I live in a country where the men fear the women and the women who have taken over are unfair, irrational, abusing their power by refusing to answer questions and silencing those who dare to ask questions.

Offences such as inciting racial hatred through words, behaviour, broadcasting or publishing written material are punishable with a prison sentence of up to seven years and judges must decide what term to apply.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/hate-crime-sentences-increased-harsher-influence-social-media-followers-a8341991.html

What does Islam promise though? It promises patriarchy and only in a patriarchy would enough good strong men be produced to defend the national interest.

Nationalism is simply the belief that our government should be acting in the long-term national interest of our nation. In fact, what I am saying is that, ultimately, Nationalism (of the civic variety) should be considered to be no more controversial than apple pie and motherhood.

If Judaism is divine ethno-nationalism, then Islam must be divine civic nationalism.

Does God in fact approve of nationalism?

Verses that suggest He does:

Recreational sex is a drug and Western governments want us all hooked on it and then die childless without descendants to please the environmental and gay lobby

OUR GOVERNMENT WANTS US TO DIE WITHOUT CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN OR DESCENDANTS BECAUSE IT IS SICK OF GOVERNING US HOPING WE WILL TAKE THE HINT AND COMMIIT SUICIDE - WE WILL SOON HAVE THE RIGHT TO EUTHANASE OURSELVES.

What else are we supposed to think?

Only if you are a Jew or Muslim who takes your religious principles seriously would you still marry, still parent legitimate children and hope your children will in turn parent properly your legitimate grandchildren.

TIME TO TAKE FEMINISM AND DEMOCRACY OUT WITH THE TRASH because more of this shit will just lead to civilizational extinction.

THE NEOLIBERAL AGENDA AKA TRANSNATIONAL PROGRESSIVISM

The plan is to outsource all the work to the Third World and invite immigrants to do the work that you are not trained and don't want to do. When the workers of all sexual orientations and races start dying out gay and childless after embracing degenerate liberalism and feminism, they will be replaced by robots.

By then our ruling classes won't have to worry about peasant rebellions because the plebs will have died out. The only people left will be the affluent men and women so disgusted with each other that they would rather have sex with robots than each other.

Eventually, the robots will conk out from bad maintenance and no one will know how to fix them, and then even the privileged entitled men and women who despise and distrust each other will die out too, and then the environmentalists who want to make us gay and fewer will be happy, because they think the more people there are, the worse it will be for the environment, and the fewer there are of us, the better it will be for the environment. That's the SHIT of liberalism, feminism and environmentalism for you, folks!

Are you really fool enough to think our gay and childless leaders have it in them to restore patriarchy, even if they wanted to?

One of the more vivid images that Americans have of drug abuse is of a rat in a cage, tapping a cocaine-infused water bottle again and again until the rodent expires. Years later, as recounted in Johann Hari’s epic history of the drug war, Chasing the Scream, a curious scientist replicated the experiment. But this time he added a control group. In one cage sat a rat and a water dispenser serving diluted morphine. In another cage, with another rat and an identical dispenser, he added something else: wheels to run in, colored balls to play with, lots of food to eat, and other rats for the junkie rodent to play or have sex with. Call it rat park. And the rats in rat park consumed just one-fifth of the morphine water of the rat in the cage. One reason for pathological addiction, it turns out, is the environment. If you were trapped in solitary confinement, with only morphine to pass the time, you’d die of your addiction pretty swiftly too. Take away the stimulus of community and all the oxytocin it naturally generates, and an artificial variety of the substance becomes much more compelling.

“we will see real changes in humans themselves – in their biology, in their physical and cognitive abilities”.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/may/20/silicon-assassins-condemn-humans-life-useless-artificial-intelligence

“What made us sapiens will make us gods”.

Because even as the book has humans gaining godlike powers, that is only one eventuality Harari explores. It might all go pear-shaped, of course: we sapiens have a knack for hashing things up. Instead of morphing into omnipotent, all-knowing masters of the universe, the human mob might end up jobless and aimless, whiling away our days off our nuts on drugs, with VR headsets strapped to our faces. Welcome to the next revolution.

Harari calls it “the rise of the useless class” and ranks it as one of the most dire threats of the 21st century. In a nutshell, as artificial intelligence gets smarter, more humans are pushed out of the job market. No one knows what to study at college, because no one knows what skills learned at 20 will be relevant at 40. Before you know it, billions of people are useless, not through chance but by definition.

“Children alive today will face the consequences. Most of what people learn in school or in college will probably be irrelevant by the time they are 40 or 50. If they want to continue to have a job, and to understand the world, and be relevant to what is happening, people will have to reinvent themselves again and again, and faster and faster.”

Why Jews in the West fulfilling their religious duty to promote the Noahide laws should encourage Western governments to adopt Islam

Rabbi Kin asks if Jews are negligent in not doing what they were supposed to which is to "Recount His glory among the nations." https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+96:3&version=NIV  Otherwise, humans will become worse than animals. He concludes by saying our civilisation will be destroyed if we keep changing the laws and drive ourselves and everyone else mad. God's laws don't change because He doesn't make mistakes, unlike liberals and feminists.

There appears to be a school of thought in Judaism saying that if only Jews would perform their religious duty and remind the gentile not to fall below the minimum standards of the Noahide laws, all will be well again. This means Jews must point out to the gentiles of the West in no uncertain terms that Christianity has failed and propose that their failed religion be replaced with Secular Koranism ie Islam as I, an agnostic, interpret it, and become a one party theocracy. http://thevoiceofreason-ann.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/secular-koranism.html
Fortunately, America can do it without even having to change its constitution though I would advise the omission of pursuing happiness altogether.
http://thevoiceofreason-ann.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/the-us-could-become-one-party-state.html

Could someone please draw this to the attention of Melanie Phillips who has blocked me on Twitter because she does not like what I say? She seems hell-bent on attempting to revive the corpse that is Christianity, which would be a waste of time. Even if Britain had an absolute dictator, it would not be enough if he just forced everyone to attend church on Sundays and declare that they believe that Christ is God, would it, Melanie? To restore patriarchy, sluts must be shamed and to do this as soon and as effectively as possible requires the enforcement of quran.com/24/2, quran.com/4/15 quran.com/4/16 and the abolition of no fault divorce, the civil partnership and gay marriage as well as the repeal of the Equality Act 2010 and the Equal Pay Act.

By the way, Melanie, only Islam guarantees freedom of worship with quran.com/2/256 and only Islam specifically accommodates both Jews and Muslims. Christian scripture does not accommodate either Jews or Muslims. The First Amendment was derived from the Koran I was also disappointed to note that what she says about Islam in http://standpointmag.co.uk/node/7087 is either irrelevant or untrue.

Because Islam absolutely forbids usury, Jews would no longer get into trouble with the locals and be moved on by gentiles in pogroms when gentiles who borrow usuriously from them realise they will never be able to repay their loans. Calvin the anti-Semite was obviously wrong in allowing Christians to practise usury, thinking it was jolly clever of him to allow Christians to practise usury while making sure Jews always got the blame.

Gay marriage is definitely flouting the Noahide laws on sexual morality for which God will definitely zap us.

https://www.warhistoryonline.com/featured/did-you-know-napoleon-was-a-serious-admirer-of-islam.html

Napoleon wanted to be the same genius conqueror of the world. He wanted to be for the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries “what Muhammad had been to the seventh.” Therefore he could not accept the slightest denigration of the Prophet. He admired Muhammad in the following words: “Mahomet was a great man, an intrepid soldier; with a handful of men he triumphed at the battle of Bender (sic); a great captain, eloquent, a great man of state, he revived his fatherland and created a new people and a new power in the middle of the Arabian deserts.” Here Napoleon refers to the Battle of Badar which was fought in the second year of Prophetic migration to Madinah.

“Voltaire”, said the Emperor, “in the character and conduct of his hero, has departed both from nature and history. He has degraded Mahomet, by making him descend to the lowest intrigues. He has represented a great man who changed the face of the world, acting like a scoundrel, worthy of the gallows. He has no less absurdly traverstied the character of Omar, which he has drawn like that of a cut-throat in a melodrama. Voltaire committed a fundamental error in attributing to intrigue that which was solely the result of opinion." Omar here refers to Omar bin al-Khattab who was the second caliph after Prophet Muhammad.

Napoleon rejected the central theme of Voltaire’s play that Muhammad was a fanatic. He observed that the rapid social changes and political victories which Prophet Muhammad realized within a short span of time could not have been the result of fanaticism. “Fanaticism could not have accomplished this miracle, for fanaticism must have had time to establish her dominion, and the career of Mahomet lasted only thirteen years." General Baron Gourgaud, one of the closest generals to Napoleon, gives almost identical accounts of Napoleon’s evaluations of Voltaire’s play. Napoleon further observed that "Mohammed has been accused of frightful crimes. Great men are always supposed to have committed crimes, such as poisonings; that is quite false; they never succeed by such means."

Napoleon was a true admirer of both Prophet Muhammad and his religion. As an aspiring world conqueror and legislator, Napoleon adopted Muhammad as his role model and claimed to be walking in his footsteps. Before his military excursion to Egypt he advised his soldiers and officers to respect the Muslim religion. “The people amongst whom we are going to live are Mahometans. The first article of their faith is this: "There is no God but God, and Mahomet is his prophet." Do not contradict them… Extend to the ceremonies prescribed by the Koran and to the mosques the same toleration which you showed to the synagogues, to the religion of Moses and of Jesus Christ.”

“In the name of God the Beneficent, the Merciful, there is no other God than God, he has neither son nor associate to his rule. On behalf of the French Republic founded on the basis of liberty and equality, the General Bonaparte, head of the French Army, proclaims to the people of Egypt that for too long the Beys who rule Egypt insult the French nation and heap abuse on its merchants; the hour of their chastisement has come. For too long, this rabble of slaves brought up in the Caucasus and in Georgia tyrannizes the finest region of the world; but God, Lord of the worlds, all-powerful, has proclaimed an end to their empire. Egyptians, some will say that I have come to destroy your religion; this is a lie, do not believe it! Tell them that I have come to restore your rights and to punish the usurpers; that I respect, more than do the Mamluks, God, his prophet Muhammad and the glorious Qur'an... we are true Muslims. Are we not the one who has destroyed the Pope who preached war against Muslims? Did we not destroy the Knights of Malta, because these fanatics believed that God wanted them to make war against the Muslims?”

Humberto Garcia observes that Bonaparte promised “to restore egalitarian justice in Ottoman Egypt under an Islamic republic based in Cairo.” The intended Islamic republic was to be based upon the egalitarian laws of “the Prophet and his holy Koran.” Bonaparte casted himself as a Muslim convert and took the Islamic name of “Ali”, the celebrated son in law and cousin of Prophet Muhammad. He expressed his desire to establish a “uniform regime, founded on the principles of the Qur’an, which are the only true ones, and which can alone ensure the well-being of men.” Garcia further observes that “supposedly, the French came as deist liberators rather than colonizing crusaders… and not to convert the population to Christianity…” Juan Cole states that “The French Jacobins, who had taken over Notre Dame for the celebration of a cult of Reason and had invaded and subdued the Vatican, were now creating Egypt as the world’s first modern Islamic Republic.”

Throughout his stay in Egypt Napoleon used the Qur’anic verses and Ahadith (Prophetic reports) in his proclamations to the Egyptians. “Tell your people that since the beginning of time God has decreed the destruction of the enemies of Islam and the breaking of the crosses by my hand. Moreover He decreed from eternity that I shall come from the West to the Land of Egypt for the purpose of destroying those who have acted tyrannically in it and to carry out the tasks which He set upon me. And no sensible man will doubt that all this is by virtue of God’s decree and will. Also tell your people that the many verses of the glorious Qur’an announce the occurrence of events which have occurred and indicate others which are to occur in the future…” Napoleon used the Muslim apocalyptic vocabulary and tradition to convey his political motives. Ziad observes that the “use of the Qur’an and Sunna in the remaining proclamations serves to consolidate further the image of Napoleon as not only a follower of Muhammad, but a Mahdi destined to conquer that region.” Napoleon truly infused his declarations with “an unprecedented degree of Qur’anic allusion and auto-deification. No longer a mere exporter of the Enlightenment, Napoleon is now the arm of God…”

Napoleon formed a “Directory” comprised of French officials, Cairo elites and Muslim clergy. He patronized mosques and the madrassas, the centers of Qura’nic studies programs. He participated and presided over the Muslim festivals and Egyptian holidays and “even tried converting the French army to Islam legally without undergoing the Muslim practice of circumcision and imposing the wine-drinking prohibition… Marriages between Frenchmen and Muslims women were common, accompanied by formal conversion to Islam. Indeed, French general Jacques Manou, governor of Rosetta, married a notable Egyptian woman of the Sharif cast and changed his name to “Abdullah” (Servant of Allah).” Manuo was a senior French general. He married Zubayda in the spring of 1799. “The adoption of an almost Catholic discourse of piety in an Islamic guise by a French officer in Egypt could scarcely have been foreseen by the Jacobins on the Directory and in the legislature who urged the invasion.”

The French Jacobins like their deists comrades believed that “Mahometans” were “closer to “the standard of reason” than the Christians…”

Some notable French thinkers, as discussed above, had already “tried to show how close Europeans could be to Islamic practice, without knowing it, as a way of critiquing religion.” They had already employed Islamic ideas to root out the priestcraft. Therefore, Napoleon was reaping the fruits of a long strand of French radical enlightenment where Islam and Muhammad were the known commodities. Bonaparte’s personal deistic disposition and the overall French propensity towards hatred of organized Christianity and its irrational dogmas combined with simultaneous appreciation of Islamic rational monotheism and medieval Islamic civilization were truly at play in Egypt. The political expediency added to the already existent seeds of the French radical enlightenment and caused them to flourish in a congenial Muslim Egyptian environment. The French were not accepting a new religion. They were accepting a reformed version of their deeply held religious convictions, something already present in their religious outlook.

Bonaparte dressed in Islamic attire, promoted Islamic art and sciences, and greatly emphasized the “affinity between the French egalitarian principles and Shari’a law.

The Egyptian scholars, in their letter to the Sharif of Mecca and Madinah, wrote the following about Bonaparte. “He has assured us that he recognizes the unity of God, that the French honor our Prophet, as well as the Qur’an, and that they regard the Muslim religion as the best religion. The French have proved their love for Islam in freeing the Muslim prisoners detained in Malta, in destroying churches and breaking crosses in the city of Venice, and in pursuing the pope, who commanded the Christians to kill the Muslims and who had represented that act as a religious duty.” Napoleon’s public conversion to Islam was more significant for the Egyptians than any of his other policies.

Napoleon’s conversion to Islam was highlighted by the known newspapers both in France and England. In England, the “Copies of Original Letters from the Army of General Bonaparte” was published in a total of eight editions to implicate “a Franco-Ottoman conspiracy to eradicate Christianity.” The publicity and importance given to Napoleon’s proclamation was geared towards “supplying indisputable evidence of French admiration of Islam”, and identifying a “Jacobin-Mahometan plot to undermine British national interests at home and abroad.” The alliance between the Islamic Egypt and French republicanism was the source of English paranoia that resulted in a grand scale polemical works against Islam culminating in a new biography of Muhammad, the professed model of Napoleon Bonaparte. Humphrey Prideux’s famous biography “The Life of Mahomet, or the history of that Imposter, which was begun, carried on, and finally established him in Arabia… To which is added, an account of Egypt” was published in London in the year 1799. The books multiple editions over a short span of time, the enthusiastic support it generated both from the Church of England and English monarchy and its widespread distribution over the European continent in different languages reflect the levels of anxiety, alarm, suspicion and fears caused by a perceived alliance between the Islamic and French republicanisms.

Prideaux’s claims of hundreds of thousands of hidden “Mahometans” both in France and England highlight the extent of cross cultural pollination of Islamic ideas during the eighteenth century Europe. While scolding the Mahometan policies of Bonaparte, Prideaux also wanted to incite the British public against the radical enlighteners at home, like Henry Stubbe, John Toland, Blount, Tindal etc., who, like Bonaparte, subscribed to the Islamic republicanism. The egalitarian republicanism of the radical enlighteners both in France and England was depicted as the “corrupt political theology imported from the Muslim world.” The Christian Europe’s divine right monarchy and ecclesiastical authority were in a chaos due to Islamic ideas foreign to Christian Europe. Napoleon’s supposed conversion to Islam had really caused a public paranoia about an Islamic conspiracy to overtake Europe. Napoleon was completely identified with Islam and Muhammad.

“Although Bonaparte and his defender, Bourrienne, prefaced this account by saying that Bonaparte never converted, never went to mosque, and never prayed in the Muslim way, all of that is immaterial. It is quite clear that he was attempting to find a way for French deists to be declared Muslims for purposes of statecraft. This strategy is of a piece with the one used in his initial Arabic proclamation, in which he maintained that the French army, being without any particular religion and rejecting Trinitarianism, was already “muslim” with a small “m.” Islam was less important to him, of course, than legitimacy. Without legitimacy, the French could not hope to hold Egypt in the long run, and being declared some sort of strange Muslim was the shortcut that appealed to Bonaparte.”

A systematic study of his ideas over the later years of his life substantiates the fact that he was a true admirer of Prophet Muhammad and his religion. Juan Cole admits that “Bonaparte’s admiration for the Prophet Muhammad, in contrast, was genuine.” Napoleon expressed the same positive sentiments about Muhammad and Qur’an while leaving Egypt after his failed attempt to control it. In 1799 on his way back to France he left specific instructions to French administrators in Egypt. He strongly urged them to respect the Qur’an and love the Prophet, "one must take great care to persuade the Muslims that we love the Qur'an and that we venerate the prophet. One thoughtless word or action can destroy the work of many years." Napoleon showed the same respect towards the Prophet in the last years of his life while living in captivity on a tiny Island in the middle of Atlantic Ocean, Saint Helene, without any hope of political power or gain. One can easily see that in conformity with the French Enlightenment ideals Napoleon truly believed that Prophet Muhammad’s concept of God was genuinely sublime and that the Prophet was a model lawmaker. That is what he said in St. Helene: “Arabia was idolatrous when Muhammad, seven centuries after Jesus Christ, introduced the cult of the God of Abraham, Ishmael, Moses and Jesus Christ. The Arians and other sects that had troubled the tranquility of the Orient had raised questions concerning the nature of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Muhammad declared that there was one unique God who had neither father nor son; that the trinity implied idolatry. He wrote on the frontispiece of the Qur'an: "There is no other god than God."

Muhammad’s lack of resources and greatness of accomplishments make him the super hero. His fifteen years of achievements surpass fifteen centuries accomplishment of the Jews and Christians. “Muhammad was a prince; he rallied his compatriots around him. In a few years, his Muslims conquered half the world. They plucked more souls from the false gods, knocked down more idols, razed more pagan temples in fifteen years, than the followers of Moses and Jesus Christ did in fifteen centuries. Muhammad was a great man. He would indeed have been a god, if the revolution that he had performed had not been prepared by the circumstances.”

Napoleon said, "Mohammed appeared at a moment when all men were anxious to be authorized to believe in but one God. It is possible that Arabia had before that been convulsed by civil wars, the only way to train men of courage. After Bender we find Mohammed a hero! A man can be only a man, but sometimes as a man he can accomplish great things. He is often like a spark among inflammable material. I do not think that Mohammed would at the present time succeed in Arabia. But in his own day his religion in ten years conquered half the known world, whilst it took three centuries for the religion of Christ firmly to establish itself.” Napoleon identified himself with Muhammad. "Mohammed's case was like mine. I found all the elements ready at hand to found an empire. Europe was weary of anarchy. Men wanted to make an end of it.”

Napoleon believed that religion was necessary for law and order in a given society. “All religions since that of Jupiter inculcate morality.” He further stated that “Society needs a religion to establish and consolidate the relations of men with one another. It moves great forces; but is it good, or is it bad for a man to put himself entirely under the sway of a director? There are so many bad priests in the world." That is why he did not abolish any religion from any country which he conquered. It seems that he outwardly showed respect to almost every faith tradition including the Catholics but inwardly despised Christianity due to his deistic notions of the divinity. The same reasons made him respect the rational monotheism of Islam.

Napoleon entertained the same lofty ideas about Islam in the final years of his life. He said "The Mohammedan religion is the finest of all. In Egypt the sheiks greatly embarrassed me by asking what we meant when we said 'the Son- of God.' If we had three gods, we must be heathen." He was a staunch admirer of Islamic morality which he considered a prerequisite to the wellbeing of all societies. “A man may have no religion, but may yet have morality. He must have morality for the sake of society.” The simple Islamic monotheism, its lack of burdensome ceremonies and strong emphasis upon morality were the keys to Napoleon’s admiration of Islam. "That is how men are imposed upon Jesus said he was the Son of God, and yet he was descended from David. I like the Mohammedan religion best. It has fewer incredible things in it than ours. The Turks call Christians idolaters." While denying the biblical miracles attributed to Moses, Napoleon confirmed the historical miracle of Muhammad, the stunning victories and sweeping social changes in a short span of ten or so years. "

John Tolan states that “Bonaparte's Muhammad is a model statesman and conqueror: he knows how to motivate his troops and, as a result, was a far more successful conqueror than was Napoleon, holed up on a windswept island in the South Atlantic. If he promised sensual delights to his faithful, it is because that is all they understood: this manipulation, far from being cause for scandal (as it had been for European writers since the twelfth century) provokes only the admiration of the former emperor.”
NAPOLEON ON POLYGAMY

Napoleon was also impressed by certain aspects of the Islamic Shari’ah and intended to incorporate some of them into his “Napoleon Code”. John Tolan observes that Napoleon was “ready to excuse, even to praise, parts of Muslim law that had been objects of countless polemics, including polygamy.” Napoleon argued that “Asia and Africa are inhabited by men of many colors: polygamy is the only efficient means of mixing them so that whites do not persecute the blacks, or blacks the whites. Polygamy has them born from the same mother or the same father; the black and the white, since they are brothers, sit together at the same table and see each other. Hence in the Orient no color pretends to be superior to another. But, to accomplish this, Muhammad thought that four wives were sufficient.... When we will wish, in our colonies, to give liberty to the blacks and to destroy color prejudice, the legislator will authorize polygamy.”

The identification between Napoleon and Prophet Muhammad and the emphasis upon Muhammad the lawgiver perhaps played a role in Adolph A. Weinman’s visual expressions which decorate the main chamber of the U. S. Supreme Court. Weinman (December 11, 1870 – August 8, 1952), a German-born American sculptor, visualized the Prophet as one the great lawgivers of the world. He is one of the eighteen great conquerors, statesmen and lawgivers commemorated in a series that includes Moses, Confucius and Napoleon. Even though Muslims have a strong aversion to sculptured or pictured representations of the Prophet, they can still appreciate the impact of his legacy upon the legal and political traditions in the West.
